TRAME is a Paris-based studio, founded by Ismail Tazi, that translates generative digital art into woven tapestries and other handcrafted objects. Tazi was born in Fez, Morocco, where weaving is central to the city's culture, and he traces TRAME's guiding idea to the Jacquard loom, which he describes as “often considered the first computer”.The studio pairs digital artists with traditional artisans, releasing its collections under the name Craft Nouveau.
The inaugural Craft Nouveau release, Navette by Alexis André, opened at Le Bon Marché in Paris in February 2023, presenting the first large-scale physical tapestry made from an original Navette NFT.André wrote an algorithm that generated images designed to be woven automatically, and TRAME worked with Néolice, a digital-manufacturing division of the Robert Four tapestry factory in Aubusson, to weave them on a loom capable of widths up to 1.8 metres.Each NFT buyer of the collection was able to claim a corresponding physical tapestry, and the work was shown again at the Salone del Mobile furniture fair in Milan that April.,
Later Craft Nouveau collections translated generative work into other crafts, including Optimism by Jeff Davis, rendered in stained glass, and Portraits by Martin Grasser, rendered in mirrors. Both were shown at Art Basel Miami in December 2023, in the exhibition “RIFLESSI” presented with ARTXCODE at the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.In 2023 TRAME also brought the digital artists IX Shells, Linda Dounia and Fingacode to Morocco to work with local weavers, resulting in the tapestry collection Desert Threads.,Desert Threads was exhibited in November 2024 at Art Blocks Marfa Weekend in Texas, alongside A.A. Murakami's knitted textile installation A Thousand Layers of Stomach and a set of handcrafted Venetian mirrors that reimagined CryptoPunks.The project was documented in the 2025 film Desert Threads: Weaving Tradition and Technology, directed by Matteo Erenbourg, which traced its journey from Moroccan workshops to the Texas desert.
In 2025 TRAME presented Enlace, a collection reimagining the Parisian café chair through generative design, developed with the architecture studio Aranda\Lasch and heritage furniture maker Maison Louis Drucker. Visitors to the collection's presentation at Downtown Design Riyadh in May 2025 used a custom algorithm, built with Art Blocks Engine, to generate unique chair patterns that Maison Drucker's artisans then hand-wove.
