Description

The traditional attire of Maluku, particularly that of the Tanimbar Islands, serves not only as a means of covering the body but also as a profound symbol of identity, social status, and the enduring cultural values of the local community. Traditionally, Tanimbar garments are crafted from locally sourced natural materials, such as tree fibers or handwoven textiles, though modern fabrics are now also employed. Characterized by the dominance of earthy tones—brown, black, and white—these colors reflect the people’s deep connection with nature. The beauty of the attire is further enhanced by an array of ornaments, including beads, shells, dog teeth, bird feathers, and intricately carved wooden elements.

Men’s attire typically centers on the niki-niki (loincloth), sometimes complemented by a simple shirt or vest, along with a headdress adorned with bird feathers, most notably those of the bird-of-paradise, signifying status and prestige. Accessories such as dog tooth necklaces and weapons like spears or machetes are common, symbolizing strength and valor. In contrast, women’s attire is distinguished by the use of the tais, a beautifully woven sarong worn from the waist or extending up to the chest. Jewelry plays a crucial role in women’s dress, with the Ina Funi—a striking, layered necklace made of beads or shells—serving as the centerpiece, often accompanied by bracelets and earrings that complete the ensemble.
