Description
Eastern State Penitentiary was built in 1829 as a new movement to reform the behavior of prisoners. Over 75,000 inmates were held throughout the life of the prison. Both male and female prisoners were contained within the walls. Murder, suicide, and escapes all happened over the life of its activity. The prison held Al Capone, Willie Sutton, Leo Callahan, Freda Frost and many other notable names. The prison was closed in 1971, named a National Historic Landmark in 1965. The now open for tours. While visiting, you can sense the spirits which have never left.
