Description

Clytie and Helios were two lovers from Greek Mythology. Clytie was an Oceanid nymph, a daughter of the sea god Oceanus. Helios was the god of the sun, who drove his chariot across the sky every day. Clytie was deeply in love with Helios, and she watched him every day as he drove his chariot across the sky. When Clytie discovered he was not in love with her, she was heartbroken and grief-stricken. In despair, Clytie sat beneath a tree and stared at the sun for nine days, never leaving her spot. She was so entranced with longing for Helios that she eventually turned into a flower: the heliotrope, or sunflower. The heliotrope still turns its face towards the sun, just as Clytie did in her last moments of life. The myth of Clytie has been used to illustrate the power of love and devotion – even in the face of rejection. It is a reminder that our love can survive even the most painful of circumstances, and that true devotion is stronger than anything else.
