Description

This project is a fantastical narrative that imagines a world where architecture and nature exist together as one. The narrative focuses on the amazing filter-feeding abilities of the oyster along with the oyster's shell - a calcite structure that has concrete-like properties.

One unique characteristic of the oyster among other sea life is its filter feeding capabilities. A single oyster is capable of filtering 50 gallons of water each day.

The Story of the Oyster Pinnacles explores the idea of deploying oyster colonies along problematic coastal regions that have excessive chemical runoff. The individual oyster would spend its life filtering toxic coastal waters and when it dies the shell is collected and recycled into concrete and casted into a mineral pinnacle.

By way of example, early Spanish settlers in present-day North Carolina and Florida created a type of oyster shell concrete called tabby. This was achieved by burning oyster shells in order to extract lime.

Mineral pinnacles are casted in layers and in accordance with the life and death of the oyster. The result is a monument of remembrance; A visual reminder of our once devastated coastlines.

The story spans over a series of beautiful, hyper-detailed digital 1/1 drawings, and has been displayed at multiple galleries around the Los Angeles area including, the WOHO gallery on Hollywood Blvd.
