Description

Portrait Title: King Aurelius of Varennes

Acquisition Note: Recovered from a shuttered private estate auction near the old maritime quarter. Seller provided no provenance and insisted it had remained in attic storage for decades.

Condition: Surface shows uniform craquelure consistent with oil tempera blends from the late fifteenth century. Minor pigment lift along the lower garment spheres. Metallic detailing on the crown required stabilization to prevent further flaking.

Estimated Era: Late Renaissance, approximately mid to late 1500s based on garment patterning, heraldic geometry, and crown construction.

Subject Description / Known History: Believed to depict a regional monarch or noble figure from the fragmented kingdom once referred to as Varennes, though no surviving records confirm the reign. Attire suggests ceremonial presentation rather than battlefield portraiture. No confirmed lineage.

Observation: Markings on the crown’s inner rim resemble a notation I have seen on two other unrelated works. The alignment is too precise to dismiss, though the meaning remains unclear.

Catalog No.: AZ-001
