The origin of coral is described in Greek mythology by the story of Perseus, after the sea creature Cetus (a sea monster that threatens Andromeda) became rocky. Perseus placed Medusa's head (which Perseus used Medusa's head to turn Cetus into stone. on the riverbank while washing his hands. He also saw Medusa's blood transform the nearby seaweed to red coral.
