Description

Maldives is made up of 26 atolls, which are formed from coral reefs that grew around the edges of ancient, now-submerged volcanic islands. These atolls consist of about 1,200 islands, with only around 200 being inhabited.

The Maldives has been inhabited for over 2,500 years. Early settlers were likely from southern India and Sri Lanka, bringing with them Buddhist traditions. For many centuries, Buddhism was the dominant religion in the Maldives. This period saw the construction of many Buddhist temples and stupas. Remnants of this era, such as the ruins of Buddhist temples, can still be found on some islands.

Some beaches in the Maldives glow at night due to bioluminescent plankton. This natural phenomenon creates a magical blue glow along the shoreline, particularly visible on Vaadhoo Island.
