This series of paintings titled "The Course of Capitalism" shows capitalism through five different phases:
- Origin
- Industrialization
- Consummation
- Destruction
- Desolation
Inspired by Thomas Cole's "The Course of Empire" this concept on capitalism highlights colinization, imperialism, industrialization, globalization, critique, war, mass consumption, depleting resources, global warming, flooding, and human extinction.
"Origin" is the first painting in this series, and shows colonizers traveling by ship to new "untouched" lands with their home behind them pummeling smoke as industry makes up the . The table in the foreground shows traded goods and a Dutch style painting, as well as a broken column, symbolizing the fallen Roman Empire that Thomas Cole presents in his paintings.
The physical versions of these paintings have since been painted over, so these are the only remaining versions of them.
