Aimless life is a constant theme of all kinds of Zen art, expressing the author's own inner state, going nowhere in a timeless moment. All people have such moments, and only then do they catch bright glimpses of the world that illuminate the interfering rubbish of memory - the smell of burning leaves in the autumn morning mist, the flight of doves illuminated by the sun against a thundercloud, the sound of an invisible waterfall at dusk, or the cry of some unknown bird in the thicket of the forest. In Zen art, every landscape, every sketch of bamboo in the wind or lonely rocks, is an echo of such moments.
