In the aftermath of the 2020 earthquake in Guánica, Puerto Rico, a pink Greco-Roman column of a second floor balcony, was seen floating over the rubble. Behind it stood an aluminum window. The home had collapsed due to a soft story failure.
A soft story occurs when a building's second level or above is stiffer than the level below. This structural contradiction also creates an illusion that the upper levels are floating.
The association of grandeur of the Greco-Roman columns contrasts with the functionality and practicality of the aluminum windows, creating a unique composition that is specific to the island.
The combination of these elements: colorful Greco-Roman columns, aluminum windows, and the soft story condition, create a surreal architectural composition portrayed in this collection.
