Description

(The production of this edition in the 'Snaketopia' series was recorded and is available on the PentaPix YouTube channel).

Taking inspiration from the 'Snake' game enjoyed on mobile phones in the late 1990s to early 2000s, this unique abstract piece was created using equally 'old school' technology.

Beginning with a 20x20 grid in Microsoft Excel, a proprietary algorithm (written in VBA code by the artist) draws, cell by cell, a 'snake' in a random colour from the 24-bit RGB palette starting at a random position on the grid. The direction the snake takes is entirely random and derived by the code. This continues until the snake hits either the edge of the grid, or its own 'tail'. At this point a new snake is created at a random point on the grid. This process continues continues until each of the 400 cells has been coloured by a snake at least once.

The final design is then transferred from Excel to a graphics editing program where adjacent coloured cells are grouped together to create the final unique piece.

The '383' in the title reflects the total number of snakes that were drawn before every cell was coloured.
