Description
The Sinamaica Lagoon is inhabited mostly by the Añú and Wayú Venezuelan ethnic groups, which means people of water, and is one of the jewels of the state of Zulia. It is located on the northwestern shore of Lake Maracaibo, has approximately 50 square kilometers of extension and its main tributary is the Limón River, it is said that the name of Venezuela has its origins in this area, because the Indians called it "Veneciuela", which means big water. Another version relates that when Alonso de Ojeda and Américo Vespucio saw the stilt houses they remembered the city of Venice and called this land "Little Venice".
