Description

Fiordland National Park covers an area of 12,607 square kilometers, making it the largest national park in New Zealand and one of the largest in the world.

Often referred to as the "eighth wonder of the world," Milford Sound is the most famous of the fiords in the park. It was named after Milford Haven in Wales and is renowned for its towering Mitre Peak and stunning scenery.

Beneath the Fiordland landscape lies a network of limestone caves illuminated by thousands of glowworms, creating an otherworldly experience for visitors.

The Fiordland region has a rich Māori history. The indigenous people used the area for hunting and gathering. They also have legends about the creation of the fiords, attributing them to the work of the godly figure Tū-te-raki-whānoa.
