The salmon run is a very interesting event to behold. If you are there in the stream, you'd be certain these salmon do not want to survive. They swim into me. Even worse, they swim straight up to the bears.
The bears tend to have one great GM after another during this time of the year though. Food is so plentiful they will pick and choose which salmon to spend energy consuming. This particular bear was on the search for roe. He would catch one, smell it, and if it didn't have what he was looking for he would just leave it and go catch another one.
It is truly wild to watch the life cycle of nature unfolding in front of you. What you are seeing in this photograph is literally the life blood of the entire Katmai ecosystem. If this didn't occur, the ecosystem would not receive the nutrients it needs to survive. It's amazing how perfectly nature created its own life cycle. It's also extremely delicate and can be easily destroyed by careless humans.
