Description

Location: Southeastern Tibet, extending into Arunachal Pradesh (India), part of the Yarlung Tsangpo/Brahmaputra river system.

American explorer and writer Ian Baker undertook several arduous expeditions into the region, culminating in his pivotal discovery of the previously mythical waterfall in 1998. His journey was chronicled in his acclaimed book, "The Heart of the World: A Journey to the Last Secret Place," vividly capturing the geographical, cultural, and spiritual essence of Tsangpo Gorge.

Tibetans revere the area around Tsangpo Gorge as Pemako, one of several mystical "Beyül" or hidden paradises described in Tibetan Buddhism. Pemako is believed to be a spiritual sanctuary, protected by powerful natural forces and mystical guardians.
In his book, Baker explores local legends and Buddhist prophecies suggesting that Pemako, with its concealed valleys and sacred waterfalls, serves as a terrestrial gateway to enlightenment, mirroring the Western myth of "Shangri-La," a hidden utopia where spiritual wisdom thrives away from worldly distractions.
