Description
Though little of his writings have survived, Chrysippus is widely considered to be one of the most important ancient philosophers thanks to his role in cementing early Stoicism as a coherent system. Like any good Stoic, he was even-tempered, happy, and did not fear death, nor should he have considering how gently he was taken. While enjoying the afternoon sun in his orchard he watched as a donkey chewed on a ripe fig. "Now give the donkey a drink of pure wine to wash down the figs" he joked, then burst out laughing at the donkey's ridiculous expression. He dropped dead with a smile on his face having lived a long and rich life; may you be so lucky.
