Depression is an alteration of the tone of mood to forms of deep sadness with reduced self-esteem and self-serving need. Depending on the psychoanalytic interpretation, depression would be the reaction to the real or imaginary loss of the beloved object introjected by the subject’s ego and toward which feelings of hatred begin with the consequent guilty feelings and reproaches of the Super-I.
