Chapter 4

After many sessions with Iris, Lina had a mosaic of approved memories the guides deemed sufficient progression. The time had come for passage into the Chamber of Rebirth beyond, where her renewed soul could rejoin the eternal current.

As Iris led her toward the ornately carved doors, Lina's fabricated memories of idyllic harmony felt flimsy as gossamer. She looked back longingly at the doorway she'd entered through. Whatever lay beyond here, once that threshold was crossed, there would be no return.

Noticing Lina's hesitation, Iris said, "Do not despair. The Chamber holds wonders that will make your sacrifices worthwhile."

But to Lina, the doors now seemed menacing, and the tunnel behind more inviting than the uncertainties ahead. This was her last chance to turn back, to reclaim what had been stripped away.

Iris gestured for her to step forward. Heart pounding, Lina wavered on the precipice of choice. Should she obey and submit to their system? Or resist and try to forge her own path? The doors creaked open, awaiting her decision...

Lina took a deep breath and turned to face Iris. "I've tried to cooperate and shed my earthly tethers as you insisted. But I cannot walk through those doors without the truth of who I was."

Iris's expression hardened. "The past only distracts from transcendence. You must relinquish it fully to proceed."

Lina stood firm. "My life was not just some obstacle to overcome. The joy and sorrow, discovery and loss - those moments shaped me. I cannot abandon those memories and still be myself. If that means banishment from advancement, I accept."

Murmurs rippled through the observing guides. Iris scowled. "You dare defy the ordered path? None before have been so foolish. There can be no exceptions to the process."

Lina turned away. "Then I ask safe passage back through the veil. My journey is not yours to dictate."

Iris blanched in shock before composing herself. "You would reject eternity itself for fleeting earthly shadows? So be it. But you deal in dangerous powers beyond your ken. Do not expect such mercy again."

With sinister finality, Iris opened the doorway through which Lina had entered this realm what seemed like an age ago. Heart pounding, Lina stepped through without looking back.

Once alone in the passage, she slumped in exhausted relief. Choosing her own ignominious exile had been terrifying, but necessary. Whatever unknown lay ahead in life or death, she would face it on her own terms, memories intact. For better or worse, Lina had taken back her existence. Now to find what came next...
