Before the 1850s, when logging began on the Californian coast, there were estimated to be 2 million acres of coast redwoods. Only 5 percent of the original old-growth coast redwood forest remains. This photo was taken in Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park in northern California and is one of the state and national parks that preserve the old and new growth redwood forest habitat.
The root systems of redwoods are very shallow and the trees can grow really tall, some reaching over 300 feet (90 meters). The root system is usually less than 10 feet (3 meters) deep, but can extend in width up to 100 feet (30 meters) and will intertwine with other redwoods, giving them strength against forces like high winds and floods. So redwoods cannot survive alone, but form communities or groves in order to thrive. Some of them grow so close together that they fuse at the base into one tree. The entire system relies on their connected roots. This photo shows a community of redwoods growing together, with a beautiful sun star shining above.
