This collection is a meager attempt to compile profiles of the never-ending layers of the Appalachian mountains. They were actually once taller than the Rockies, about a half billion years ago, but millions of years of erosion whittled them down to be no taller than 6,684'. Even though I've lived most of my life in major cities, I recently moved to Asheville and fell in love with the mountains. One of my favorite activities has been driving down the winding Blue Ridge Parkway during sunrise. It's such a dreamy experience: The creamy cloud inversions, the swirls of golden, pink, and purple light, and the stacks of wavy ridges will never get old. Most of these images were taken near Asheville, North Carolina, but others were taken in Tennessee near the Smokies, or outside of Roanoke, Virginia.
