Is Trash Art Dead?

Description

Is Trash Art Dead? It's a good question. The meme-making community decamped to Objkt in mid-2022 following Robness' now legendary '64 Gallon Toter' yet again being banned - this time from OpenSea; as they proceeded to (probably with no real legal basis) rip down every piece of work that mentioned ‘Toter’ under a DMCA from Wastequip LLC.

With freedom we went Toter-crazy and Trash genre memes reached a delirious, Bacchanalian fever pitch here around Dec 2022.

However there was a quick pivot and since Jan 2023 the SPAM Art movement has captured the attention of meme Art makers. In tandem with growing popularity of AI apps, and a decent sprinkle of Glitch genre thrown in the mix (attention thrown on that movement via Sothebys), it has risen and taken over. Well, for now.

My 404 Toter was made ‘Trash Art of the Day’ by Robness on 29 May 2023, which is maybe the third time I’ve had that privilege.

Art remixed from GT Sewell’s Rarible piece ‘McTRA$H’, 2022.
