Catching crabs to feed the family on the mangrove mudflats of the Purari Delta. Having asked her how she juggles looking after a newborn infant and providing food for the family, she asked if I wanted to see how it was done. Baby in a freshly made akeke (basket), she laughs as I keep sinking in the mud. She moves effortlessly, full of joy as moves along the banks, knowing exactly which crab hole to explore. This skill is an inheritance she will pass on to her daughter. Sadly much of the crab stocks are being depleted by foreign buyers preying on local need.
