In the late 19th century, the style of ukiyo-e was brought to the West and had a major impact on the techniques of Western painting. Van Gogh, Monet, and other up-and-coming painters of the time were inspired by the Far Eastern Japan seen through Ukiyo-e and painted. At that time, the great distance, which was a physical barrier, stirred the imagination.

Time has changed, and in the 21st century, I do not paint. I do not even use my imagination. I simply type the words "Ukiyo-e style New York while being in Japan, with a computer in hand, accessing a server in the United States. It is as if a painter in the U.S. had been thinking of Japan in the Far East and painted a picture.

But still, what came out of it was certainly a work of art created by my own hands.

Imagination is a unique act. Imagination is free. Imagination does not belong to anyone.

What is imagination?

19世紀後半、浮世絵というスタイルが西洋にもたらされ、西洋絵画の手法に大きなインパクトを与えた。 ゴッホ、モネ、当時の新進気鋭の画家たちは、浮世絵から見る極東の日本に思いを馳せ、絵を描いた。 当時は距離という大きな隔たりが想像力を掻き立てた。

時は変わって21世紀、私は絵を描かない。想像力も働かせない。「浮世絵スタイルのニューヨーク」と単に文字を書くだけだ。日本にいながらコンピュータを片手にアメリカにあるサーバーにアクセスしながら。 それにもかかわらず、ニューヨークにいる人工知能が極東の日本に思いを馳せ描いたような絵が生成される。

だが依然として、そこから生まれたのは確かに私の手によって生み出された想像的なニューヨークの姿である。

想像は自由なのだ。 想像は誰のものでもない。
