Description
The Pele tribal mark is one of the most recognized and culturally significant forms of facial scarification among the Yoruba people of southwestern Nigeria. This type of mark is typically made up of three thin, vertical lines etched into the cheeks, though variations exist depending on family or regional traditions. In modern times, the practice of tribal marking has significantly declined due to changing social values, globalization, and criticism over the pain and permanence of the procedure. Some now view it as outdated or unnecessary, while others see it as an important part of Yoruba heritage that should be preserved symbolically or artistically rather than physically.
