As a tropical nation in the heart of the Caribbean, Puerto Rico is no stranger to hurricanes. The last one to hit as a major hirracaine was Maria in 2017. The landscape painted here is from a picture from 2022. You can still see bright blue fema tarps, these tarps were given as a temporary fix, with a promise of help that never came. Food was hidden, supplies were “lost”, people died of starvation, thirst and inadequate care. The phenomenon was natural, but this disaster was man made. The lack of response created a hostile context that shaped the collective psyche forever, a whole country with PTSD. This hostile and bleak context post Maria also had the effect of a massive population exodus and a political and infrastructure framework set for the application of Shock Doctrine politics that are having an effect to this day.
