Paws and Reflect: Sam’s concept of time.
Once upon a sunlit morning in a cozy little town, there was a dog named Sam. Sam was a crossbreed with a heart as warm as his fluffy coat. From Sam’s perspective, time wasn't about the ticking of clocks or the changing of calendars. Instead, time was a series of wondrous moments and scents that painted the story of his life with his beloved master, Christopher.
In Sam’s world, time began the moment Christopher walked through the rescue's doors. There were many tails wagging that day, but Sam’s was the one that caught Christopher’s eye. He knelt down and whispered, "Hello, friend." In that instant, Sam knew he had found his forever home. To him, it wasn't just a day; it was the beginning of everything.
Over the years, Sam’s concept of time became intrinsically linked to Christopher’s routines and habits. Mornings were marked by the aroma of coffee and the jingle of keys as Christopher prepared for work. Sam would sit by the window, his nose pressed against the glass, watching as seconds turned into minutes and minutes into hours, until finally, the familiar sound of Christopher’s car would signal the end of the workday.
Evenings were Sam’s favorite. He understood this time as the soft glow of the living room lamps and the rhythmic sound of Christopher’s footsteps on the hardwood floor. It was the time for long walks around the neighbourhood, where every tree and lamppost held the history of seasons past.
Sam’s weekends were treasures, measured not in hours, but in adventures and cuddles. Time was the wind in his fur on car rides, the splash of water on lake trips, and the quiet companionship of lying beside Christopher for a nap after a busy day.
Seasons changed, and Sam’s snout grew a little greyer, but the love between him and Christopher only deepened. He learned to understand the passing years through the joy of holidays, the warmth of summers, the falling leaves of autumns, and the crisp air of winters that made his breath visible.
Time, for Sam, was also in the waiting. The patience of sitting by the door until Christopher returned, the loyalty of guarding the house, and the anticipation of shared playtime. It was an endless cycle of hellos and goodbyes, each reunion as sweet as the first.
As Sam grew older, time seemed to slow down. The walks became shorter, and the naps became longer. Yet, even when his legs were weary, his heart was full. For every heartbeat was a moment shared with Christopher, and that was a treasure beyond the measure of minutes or years.
In his twilight years, Sam understood that his time with Christopher wouldn't last forever, at least not in the way he knew it. But he also knew that love, much like his own spirit, wasn't something that could be bound by the hands of a clock. It was eternal.
When Sam finally closed his eyes for the last time, with Christopher’s hand softly stroking his fur, he did so with the knowledge that his time with him was a collection of countless precious moments. And he was sure that in some way, through memories and the indelible mark he left on his heart, their time together would continue to tick on, as endless as the stars in the night sky.
