After all failed attempts, the Jade Emperor appealed to the Buddha who resided in his temple in the West. Buddha bet with Sun Wukong that Sun Wukong would not be able to escape from his palm. Sun Wukong, who could cover 108,000 li in one jump, arrogantly agreed with the bet. He then jumped even with many jumps and landed in a place where there were only five poles. He thought he had reached the end of the world. As a sign that he had arrived at that place, he wrote on the pillars the words "Great Monk Equal to Heaven", then urinated on it. He then jumped back into the Buddha's palm to claim the winning bet. He was surprised to realize that the five pillars were the five fingers of the Buddha's hand. Sun Wukong immediately tried to run away, but Buddha crushed him with a palm that turned into a mountain. The mountain is sealed with the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum in gold letters. Sun Wukong was imprisoned there for five centuries.
