Description
Yaa Asantewaa was the queen mother of the Ashanti Empire. She was an intellectual and human rights activist as well as a just queen and a brave war leader. She became famous for commanding the Ashanti kings in the war in which her people defended their independence.
Yaa Asantewaa was chosen by the king of the region to lead the Asante war force. It was the first time in their history that a woman had been appointed to this important post. An army of 5,000 was led by the queen mother Nana Yaa Asantewaa.
Yaa Asantewaa was a powerful Ashanti queen of her time. A powerful symbol of Africa today, she is still referred to as the Queen Mother. She remains a beloved figure in Asante history for her role in resisting colonialism.
