Fire, the most insatiable of the 4 elements, is often used as a symbol of passion, drive, and gusto.
To me, this photo is very personal. As a farm boy raised in Ontario, the salty waters of the Canadian West Coast always seemed foreign. The first time I set eyes on the ocean, alit with the setting sun, I fell in love, vowing to one day make a home that overlooks the crashing waves and fiery sunsets. Finally, after 13 years living in damp basement flats and cramming roommates into derelict houses, I was able to rent a modest flat in an older building on the ocean. My little place is no Taj Mahal, but I am able to hear the seagulls cry and the waves lap, which is enough for me...a constant reminder of my own personal pursuit of happiness. This is the greatest photo I’ve ever created from my little place by the sea; the sun setting the sky ablaze as it dips below the misty Pacific in the distance.
