Description

Tapir Tapirus terrestris, Anta: South American, or Brazilian Tapir (ultimately from tapi'ira, a Tupi word to denote such animals), were the closest the first nations of the region (coastal regions known to people whom speak Tupi as Pindorama "Land of the Palm-Trees", and deeper into the continent as Tapuiretama "Land of the Enemy") had to cattle, albeit their relation was one strictly toward hunting. Illustrated here are a calf tapir and an adult one, the spots and strips disappear as they age. Despite living in forested areas, they're common near water, often using mudpools to protect their skin from insects. Found in the Amazon Rainforest, east of Andes to Guianas, Colombia, and Venezuela to north. On south, ranges go as far as Argentina and Paraguay. They also occur in Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Threats includes poaching and hunting. Along all other species of Tapir they're endangered, some even critically. Mixed Media: Colour pencils, ballpoint Ink pens, digital edition and background. Drawing made in 2017, combined w/background for the Brashill4Tez event. https://lynkfire.com/gustyphon https://twitter.com/gustyphon
