In Belgium, the soft sandwich remains inseparable from the funeral ritual. With its inclusive nature and adaptability to all generations and dental conditions, it is traditionally enjoyed in tandem with a coffee after the ceremony, thereby uniting the attendees in a masticatory communion. This gentle dish evokes childhood, a tender detachment and offers a simple and comforting culinary experience. It serves as a soothing and fortifying counterbalance after the emotional ordeal of the final farewell.
Having recently consumed my fair share of funeral sandwiches, a harsh reality has dawned upon me: the lack of renewal and the semantic poverty that characterize this culinary practice. However, it provides a fertile ground for philosophical, aesthetic, and symbolic exploration, a tangible support for our contemplation of life and death, extending it into to the crematorium or cemetery cafeteria.
Here are some suggestions for simple symbolic arrangements, playing on the contrasts of black and white, marble and flower, egg and black pudding, sphere and elongated rectangle. To ensure no one is forgotten, I have also developed a specific line for the funerals of children and beloved pets.
Finally, I wish to express my gratitude to Stephan Bissot, whose magnificent monologue "Après nous les mouches" drew my attention to the importance of the funeral soft sandwich.
Without any specific gastronomic or funeral aspirations, I present the "Farewell Bites" project as an open inspiration for our dear undertakers and funeral catering companies. These images are recorded in the form of NFTs in order to ensuring their eternal preservation and universal access.
Our slogan: Farewell Bites – Bites of Life, Crumbs of Eternity.
Enjoy this virtual sandwiches, but real meditation.
