Description

There is a phrase attributed to Stanley Brouwn that says: “I want my art to be the blue of the sky.” I’m not sure if it’s true, but I almost always subscribe to Stanley’s words, and in this case, I feel it is one of the most powerful artistic manifestos. There is something about the sky that reminds us every day of the magnitude of nature and the scale of the human. There’s a calculation suggesting that if we wanted to analyze the planetary climate systems in full detail, it would require computational systems so intensive that their heat and energy consumption would, in turn, impact Earth’s climate. The sky, the clouds, the atmosphere, the weather—these are phenomena we must think about on a planetary scale. It is impossible for us to fully predict them; we can only observe. Brouwn was right: the sky is the most complex generative art system on planet Earth.

Fábrica de cielos inexistentes (Factory of Nonexistent Skies) is a collection of synthetic videos featuring skies, clouds, rainbows, and other atmospheric phenomena. It explores how LLMs interpret the various classifications of clouds we have observed on this planet. The results are a meditation on nature and our place on Earth: the human, as a machine generating meaning, finds in these abstract and unpredictable phenomena the signs that shape our cultural and emotional language, one that has existed since the dawn of human memory.

Working with the sky as a creative input feels familiar to me. My first steps in creating visual art involved photographs of sunsets, through which I learned to digitally modify images. I know that the impossibility of capturing the clouds—or the emotions the sky evoked in me—led me to explore glitch art, delve deeper into the essence of art, and grow as a person. That’s why this collection is nothing entirely new. But it is a step forward.

In previous projects, I’ve worked with similar methods to produce synthetic skies, but what distinguishes this collection is the wealth of visual and textual information I’ve gathered on clouds. It has allowed me to build a LoRa model focusing on the eight different classes of clouds and their diverse forms.

We could read Fábrica de cielos inexistentes (Factory of Nonexistent Skies) as the Anthropocene's dreams of skies we will never see, but it is primarily a collection of wishes from gm and gn. It is designed to be shared among friends, to fill our digital communications with good intentions, because celestial events are not private moments but shared experiences to which everyone is invited.

Fábrica de cielos inexistentes is a collection about sky made with stabledifussion output with custom LoRas and runwayml gen2 img 2 video.
