Description

Tatreez is a traditional form of Palestinian embroidery, rich in symbolism and cultural significance. The word "tatreez" itself is Arabic for embroidery. This intricate needlework has been practiced for centuries, passed down from mother to daughter, and serves as a powerful expression of Palestinian identity, history, and connection to the land. In 2021, UNESCO recognized the art of Palestinian embroidery as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The motifs and colors used in Tatreez are deeply meaningful. Common motifs are inspired by nature and daily life, including birds, trees, flowers, and geometric patterns.

Beyond its decorative function, Tatreez has become a symbol of resistance and resilience. In the face of displacement and the occupation of Palestinian territories, the practice of Tatreez helps to preserve cultural heritage and assert a national identity. After the Nakba in 1948, when many Palestinians were displaced, the distinct regional styles of Tatreez began to blend as women from different villages shared their patterns in refugee camps, creating new, unified designs. During periods when the public display of the Palestinian flag was banned, women would embroider the flag's colors into their clothing as a subtle act of defiance. Today, Tatreez continues to be a vital part of Palestinian culture, both in Palestine and in the diaspora, connecting generations and telling the ongoing story of the Palestinian people.

This piece is a selected iteration from a program that creates different compositions made from traditional Tatreez patterns. It was done with huge respect for the Palestinian people and its cultural heritage, and advocating for the universality of its Art and significance.
