Description

This Can is a representation of the famous “We Can Do It!” poster, created by J. Howard Miller in 1943, with the aim of raising the morale of women who, during World War II, worked in shipyards and factories, producing weapons, ammunition and supplies, replacing the men who had left for war.

The poster was actually based on Naomi Parker when she worked at Naval Air Station Alameda, an aircraft factory. On March 24, 1942, a United Press International photographer took photographs of her as she worked. These photos were later used for newspaper articles such as the Oakland Post-Enquirer and the Pittsburgh Press. These same black and white photos were later used by graphic illustrator J. Howard Miller and resulted in the famous poster.

Since the 1980s, the woman on the poster has been identified as Rosie the Riveter and has become a cultural icon around the world, and is still recognized today as a symbol of female entrepreneurship.
