Description

Ekpo, translating to ‘ghost’ is a cultural society masquerade performance art form of the Ibibio and Annang People in Southern Nigeria. During the expansion of the Aro-Kingdom, the performance was also adopted by neighboring Igbo communities namely, Arochukwu and Ohafia in Abia state. Generally viewed as souls of the dead visiting the land of the living, the Ekpo Masquerade is performed by the warrior age group of most communities in the region especially during Festivals. They maintain social order and the masks are usually black with naturalistic appearance and movable jaws.
