Give gratitude for the offerings of Sage! May there be abundance and health for all! Sage, also known as Salvia officinalis, is a perennial herb that is a member of the mint family and calls the Mediterranean region homeland. Sage of many varieties have been used in spiritual and ritual practices for centuries across cultures. Sage reveals a strong spiritual energy and is often used in smudge sticks, which are bundles of dried herbs that are burned for their purifying smoke. Sage is believed to have the power to cleanse negative energy and promote spiritual awareness. An alternative to burning the herb is to use a hydrosol (a by-product of the essential oil) to clear the air. Sage contains flavonoids, terpenes and volatile oils, and have had a long history of use to humans for culinary as well as medicinal purposes for a variety of ailments including: sore throats, indigestion, and diarrhea, excessive sweating and hot flashes. Sage’s benefits include memory enhancement, and when ingested has a calming and grounding effect on the mind and body. The herb and its oil are also used in hair care to strengthen hair and prevent hair loss, dandruff and dry scalp. The leaves can be harvested before the plant flowers for the most potent flavor, however, I always let some plants go from flower to seed and provide shelter for the birds. The Sage flowers on our farm are a beautiful deep purple and the seeds are nearly black. Sage is one of the most versatile herbs we grow at Sister Sage Herb Farm.
