Deranged Landscapes is a collection of 36 GIFs which have been conceptualized as electric landscapes oscillating between the static and the fluid, becoming an interplay of imagination, digital machines, and the screen-centered reality of the present. Referring to the "Streams" series, the works represent an expansion into a wider landscape, in which the stream plays an even more integral and, at the same time, disruptive role in a digital landscape.
The GIFs are the result of simple, cyclical animation and multiple, layered image manipulation. The final works display pixel manipulation as a form-finding process. The image manipulation becomes an instrument of transformation that leads to a visual reality that is as much defined by its technical process as well as the illusion of the natural. As a genre in painting and art in general, the landscape serves as a representational form for the human condition in its relation to the surrounding world he lives in, as well as the inner world of his existence.
All 36 'Deranged Landscapes' represent the tension between the artificial and the natural. The digital landscape becomes a ground to reflect on human automation and naturalization of techniques of recognizing, defining and thinking. The aesthetic machine, the electric screen, reveals itself in the work in a form that deranges and questions the flow of its calculation and the naturalization coming with it.
