The Death of the Artist serves as my direct response to AI Art detractors in any format. Put simply, denial of tools, any tool, ai or other, comprises the worst form of ableism.
Art is Art. The Artist is Dead! Long Live the Artist!
The following images were made using multiple and ALL current ai and digital-tools at my disposal. I am proud to say that I have worked very hard to incorporate and master some of the new tools and techniques in this space. I have absolutely no shame in saying these images, are Art (capital ‘A’), and have their place.
AI Art has a place in the canon. To deny AI art, in favor of some form of required labor, is abhorrent.
Most detractors of AI, or any tool, fail to understand its many potential uses and abilities. And Every tool is a weapon if you hold it right.
Authors, Musicians, Photographers, have all been dealing with the ‘Death’ of their form for many years. The existential angst over this transition has been well-studied and documented (see Barthes above), and all Great Arts survived the transition. All Great Arts adapted and thrived afterwards.
We ask, ‘What is Art?,’ but we seem to be doing it within an echo-chamber. Please feel free–and by all means–make space for the ‘new’ of every generation, but not without an informed-eye to the past. The Great Conversation has been ongoing for an established 6000 years. This is just another debate among many in that long and treasured history.
If you are a ‘traditional artist’ who has spent years honing a craft, be proud in your efforts and labor. MIDI did not ‘kill’ music. Digital Photography did not ‘kill’ the developing rooms (nor Polaroids).
As a neurodivergent, I rely on every tool in the arsenal to bring images to life. My efforts are not in vain, and I am Proud.
