Mortal Coil is a series exploring how artificial intelligence understands and represents human anatomy. The pieces are created by using AI segmentation on medical datasets—CTs, MRIs, and X-rays—originally intended for machine learning. After erasing segmented elements, these images were then reconstructed using generative image models, and further processed into videos through AI-generated prompts. The audio was also synthesized by an artificial intelligence after analyzing the images and videos. Some of the questions we asked ourselves while making this project: What is the virtual representation of humanness inside of an AI? How does an AI understand body parts, and how they function? Can digital simulations suggest alternative understandings of the body? Audio was AI-generated.
