Osakabe-hime is a female youkai who lives in ancient Himeji Castle. Osakabe-hime's abode is a room on the very top floor of the main tower of Himeji Castle, built in the 14th century. Osakabe-hime is a recluse who despises people, but once a year she descends from the tower to meet with the master of the castle and tell him what the future holds for Himeji. She usually appears as a statuesque woman or an old woman in a layered kimono. Osakabe-hime is believed to be able to manipulate people, read minds and predict fate. There are stories in which Osakabe-hime, despite her reclusive lifestyle, does not anger those who disturb her peace, but helps them, rewards them for their courage and lets them go in peace. It is unknown who the mysterious Osakabe-hime really is. There are suggestions that it is actually an old powerful kitsune who has changed her appearance, the ghost of a noble lady, the spirit of a woman sacrificed during the construction of a castle (in ancient times this custom was widespread in Japan everywhere and was called hitobashira) and so on.
