Description

"I'm No Superhero" is part of The Cultural Appropriation and Assimilation Series. I've always been fascinated by how fashion becomes a vehicle for the tangible and symbolic formation of the Self and its identity.

Through cultures, fashion has been and still is a powerful tool to restrict and transform women's body.

As a result, the direct physical contact and intimacy of the dress with the body becomes a powerful tool in the social processes of indoctrination.

The materials that are worn and carried on the body display "social contracts" between the body and the outside world.

Even nudity is a form of apparel, and so it's the burning, branding, or cutting of decorative scars or words into the skin as a permanent body modification.

I created "I'm No hero" as a sort of meditation on those symbols of beauty that don't actually seem to liberate but instead condition and repress one's ability to choose.
