Description

Wired Couple [truncated octahedron network] is one of many image variants of this theme and concept that comprise Victor Acevedo’s Wired Couple series. This collection of images was created gradually over time from 1988 to 1991.

Acevedo has said, “This is called a remix, because in March 2024, I updated the original version slightly by darkening the background detail to left of the center figure’s head. I felt that what was there was a bit too distracting.”

“During my art school days, I immersed myself in the study of polyhedra and their special properties. I became very interested in how some of them could infinitely interlock face to face and fill (a) space without any gaps. They demonstrated symmetry operations that could be conceptualized as the 3-dimensional counterpart to all space filling 2D polygons (tessellations). For example, a checkerboard floor made up of alternating black and white squares, or a tiling of contiguous hexagons.”

Wired Couple [truncated octahedron network] riffs on the juxtaposition of the two photo-sourced stylized human figures interlocked with two networks of all-space filling truncated octahedra. One yellow and another shadow version in blue.

From Wikipedia: In geometry, the truncated octahedron is the Archimedean solid that arises from a regular octahedron by removing six pyramids, one at each of the octahedron's vertices. The truncated octahedron has 14 faces (8 regular hexagons and 6 squares), 36 edges, and 24 vertices.
