This painting is a depiction of the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. In this painting, the cross is engulfed in flames but Jesus' body remains unharmed. This is because, in Iranian belief, fire is the criterion of good and evil, and if someone returns unharmed from the ordeal of fire, they are not a sinner; this trial by fire is called "fire baptism."
