In Persian mythology Azhi Dahaka or Zahhak, an ambitious businessman by all historical accounts, employed a chef who prepared the most exquisite meals and drink for his master. One night while intoxicated from his excessive indulgence, the chef snuck behind Azhi and kissed both of his shoulders. Azhi awoke the following morning to immense venomous serpents sprouting from his skin and to the realization he had been deceived. Disguised as a chef it was Ahriman, the God of Chaos and Darkness, who instead of offering affection the previous night had cursed Azhi Dahaka and enslaved him to absolute evil.
Over time the serpents became insatiable, feasting only on the souls of men through their heads. And as Azhi’s power became darker still, enshrouding his lands, he sat in judgement of many. The three before him in this depiction stand on the pillars of Freedom, Truth and Justice. All have fallen to Ahriman’s evil except Truth, who rises in defiance of Azhi Dahaka and total darkness for civilization.
