Description
City Symmetries is a set of 17 images exploring symmetric transformations of urban landscapes from above.
One inspiration for is the disproportionate symmetry found in traditional Turkish rugs. The traditional patterns are never mechanically repeated but rather their mirroring is subtly transformed or crippled.
The more obvious inspiration is the cities of Tokyo and Osaka themselves. Their sprawling nocturnal expanses of the neon urban grids crisscrossed by thruways.
All images in the set began as original aerial photographs. The bulk of the transformations are generative and kaleidoscopic, but tweaks and details were worked out by hand.
