It was created to honor and celebrate the roles and contributions of women past and present as we look toward the future. In 1980, the week of March 8th was designated by a Presidential proclamation as "National Women’s History Week". In the proclamation, President Jimmy Carter noted "...Too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well...". In 1987, the U.S. Congress designated the month of March as “Women’s History Month".
