Purple coneflower (“Echinacea”) is not only beautiful, but it’s deceptively complex. At first blush, the flowers appear to be a radial collection of petals with a forest of stamens in the center. Each of the outer petals is actually a sterile flower that serves as a landing pad for insects. The orange center consists of individual flowers that attract bees and other pollinators.
