Description

The iconic 1985 National Geographic photograph of Sharbat Gula, with her piercing gaze, symbolises the resilience and strength of refugees. Her eyes, full of fear and defiance, tell a story of survival amidst war and displacement. This powerful image inspired me to create a painting that honours her spirit and the broader experience of suffering, survival, and hope.

In my painting, I focused not only on capturing Sharbat Gula’s likeness but also on the depth of emotion in her gaze. The layers of oil paint evoke the texture of her story, from the external world to her internal struggle. Her expression speaks of her endurance and the quiet power of survival.

Incorporating symbolism from The Little Mermaid, I connected Sharbat Gula’s journey to Ariel’s transformation and sacrifice. Ariel, who gives up her voice to find freedom, mirrors the sacrifices made by refugees like Sharbat Gula—caught between worlds, navigating hardship in search of a better life. The symbolic use of Ariel’s story enhances the themes of transformation and loss, representing the journey of those who must endure and adapt to survive.

The painting, paired with the poem "An Eastern Ballad", explores themes of transformation, sacrifice, and strength. It serves as a tribute to the enduring spirit of refugees—those like Sharbat Gula, whose eyes speak volumes and embody the courage to overcome, even in the darkest of circumstances.
