Description
The ancient Mesopotamian goddess Ishtar was the goddess of love, fertility, war, and the planet Venus. Ishtar was also known as Inanna and Astarte. Aspects of the ancient cult surrounding Ishtar survive in the modern day celebration of Easter. This image was derived from a photo of the 3,800 year-old Mesopotamian terracotta plaque "Queen of the Night", also known as the Burney Relief, displayed at the British Museum. In that relief, the Goddess was surrounded by owls and stood on a lion. It may have portrayed Ishtar, or her sister Ereshkigal Goddess of the Underworld. The static frontal image indicates the goddess was intended for worship. Worshipping this image is allowed.
